The school is centrally located in town. It is part of the Fitzroy/Central West Region falling under the Central West District with its head office based in Longreach, Queensland.

The school caters for children from prep to year six. The majority of our students come from the immediate town of Birdsville, with School of Distant Education students visiting our school and participating in special events such as camps and sporting days.

Birdsville State School is a band 5 teaching principal school. The school employs a number of staff, including a teaching principal, school support teacher who is shared with Bedourie State School, teacher aide/s, administration officer, cleaner, grounds person and pool cleaner. The school has access to a variety of support personnel from the Longreach area, such as guidance officers, speech therapists and occupational therapists. We are also supported in our delivery of languages other than English (LOTE). French is delivered by internet lessons every week for upper primary students.

A full and interactive curriculum is provided for all students. As well as our key learning areas of English, Mathematics, Science, and History - the school provides an opportunity for students to participate in the education experiences of yearly arts camps, swim camps, and sports camps. The school utilises other local town facilities to enhance our educational outcomes including the Diamantina Shire library, a large grassed oval, tennis courts and an indoor cricket/netball sports centre.

The classroom environment is technologically resourced to cater for students of the 21st century. It has a wireless internet connection, a computer to student ratio of less then 2:1, an interactive whiteboard with a statically-mounted data projector as well as a portable data projector and screen.
